Watchet Baptist Church
is a small, friendly group of believers who live in some of the most deprived communities on the Somerset coastline. The church has received the support of Home Mission for many years and is hugely grateful for the enabling impact it has had on mission in our communities.
About eight years ago the church was forced to sell its building due to the prohibitively high cost of maintenance and repairs. The proceeds of this sale were held in trust and five years ago we began a process of seeking God for his vision of the church's future and how this money should be spent. After much prayer and discussion it was decided that, rather than building a place for our Sunday gatherings, God was leading us to open a new community facility in the heart of our town. Five years later and after a major fund-raising and renovation project, that new facility - called 'The Sanctuary' - is up and running and serving those in our community. We opened in April 2013 and run a host of activities ranging from
Youth Cafés to a weekly Community Meal (free for those using our local Food Bank) to Children and Families groups to activities for older folks - take a look at our website
to find out more.
We meet on Sundays in our local school hall which suits us fine and the congregation has grown over those five years from about 20 to about 65 people of all ages. We are blessed to have regular contact throughout the week with those who are not yet Christians through the different activities we run at The Sanctuary and have had the privilege of baptising over 25 people over the last five years - praise God!
Support from Home Mission has enabled all this to happen. As a church in one of the most socially deprived parts of the UK we have benefited greatly from the support of our Baptist family and we would like to say a huge 'thank you' and 'God bless you' as you have blessed us.
