NBACoulby Newham Baptist Church

  • With extra help from Home Mission, this church has developed the vision it had two years ago, when their financial prospects were difficult.

  • The church has seen growth through engagement in some new initiatives over the past two years.

  • With a number of new regulars in the 18-35 year age range, they are developing a mission to millennials.

BePartWith great commitment from the church members and leaders, and with the energetic ministry of Stephen Sutton, church life and mission at Coulby Newham Baptist Church in Middlesbrough has been greatly encouraging.  Two years ago they were staring a financial crisis in the face and yet, at the same time, sensing a new vision from God to engage new initiatives.
ColbyNewhamChurchOver the past two years they have been able to develop their work and their buildings. There has been a significant increase in attendance at Sunday morning services and the addition of 13 new committed members and 12 new regular attenders in the 18-35year olds (millennials) age range who they are seeking to develop into a group to help lead the church in its mission to millennials.
The church plays an active role amongst the other churches in Middlesbrough. The church has been able to re-launch the Christian Union in a local school, Kings Academy, develop their Men’s Breakfast to be in partnership with five other churches in Middlesbrough with up to 50 attending. They are heavily involved in Doulos, a YFC discipleship year that aims to raise up the Christian leaders of tomorrow. They providing mentoring to youth workers in the town, and engage with Middlesbrough Food Bank and are engaged in developing the Christ First Network which is a relational network of around 20 churches in Middlesbrough who pray together weekly and are seeking to develop unity in the town.
With extra help from Home Mission they were able to develop the vision of two years’ ago and stand in a much better place. They have been able to take out a new 25-year lease for their Community Building which they call the Trading Post and have redeveloped its main hall which now hosts a child care work four days a week.  As well as housing the church’s ongoing ministries such as Kids Club, Youth Church, Mums and Tots Group, Seniors Coffee morning, it gives them scope to begin working with other partner organisations in the area such as, Citizens Advice Bureau and Ageing Better Middlesbrough and will become a distribution centre for the Middlesbrough Foodbank Centre. The new cafe style area will also provide the perfect venue for our Alpha Courses and CAP Money Courses.
SteveSuttonAlthough the minister, Steve Sutton, is supported by Home Mission they have been able to include in their ministry team a couple called Emma and Vincent Sacco who are self-funded and both give 30 hours a week to leading Youth and Children's Ministries as well as numerous other tasks.
