 SEBAGood News Brighton

  • Pioneering work in Moulsecoomb - a housing estate in Brighton

  • Connecting with the community in various ways, including meeting the needs of those who are lonely and isolated

  • Grateful to God for bringing the community closer together through a heart-breaking time

Good News Brighton is a pioneering work in Moulsecoomb, a housing estate on the outskirts of Brighton.  The core team is made up of Neil and Jessica Hilton, and Sean and Fay Older, with Neil Hilton being the minister.  We moved our families in to Moulsecoomb three years ago, following a desire to live out the Good News of Jesus in a relevant and accessible way.  We are passionate about loving the people around us, and the place in which we live.

GoodNewsBrightonChalkOct18For the last 18 months we have been using a council building in the centre of Moulsecoomb as our base.  This has opened up lots of opportunities to enlarge our ministry, and has created an increased awareness of our work.  On Saturday mornings, we have an informal church gathering, where we eat bacon rolls, read the Bible and discuss it together.  Many of the people who attend are connecting with the Good News of Jesus for the first time. We are also involved in the local community in a number of ways, some of which are: befriending lonely and isolated people; we run Chomp Moulsecoomb, which is a family-focussed holiday programme which provides food and activities for families who rely on free school meals in term time; Good News Shed – a DIY / woodwork group to connect people together and bless the community around us; building friendships and chaplaincy at the local co-operative pub; affordable counselling for our local community; ladies group meeting weekly to connect in friendship.  We want to be a community of people that are continually discipled by the person of Jesus, as well as each other, that encourage discipleship as a way of life.

Things to praise and thank God for
  • More people are attending our Saturday informal gathering, some of which have no Christian background.  Jesus is evidently working in people’s hearts, and are turning to him for the first time, resulting in their lives being changed.
  • We will be starting a Biblical Portrait of Marriage course for people who have been in a relationship, but have expressed a desire to have their relationship align with their growing faith in Jesus.
  • Chomp Moulsecoomb has supported more families this past summer than ever before, providing 281 meals over all the sessions, and building deeper friendships.

GoodNewsBrightonGroupOct18Things to ask God for.
  • The needs in our area are very apparent, which makes our work quite draining.  Please pray for refreshing and God’s sustaining over our team.
  • We are praying for more people to join our core team, on mission in the area.
  • The building we use, Hillview Good News Centre, has been a great blessing.  We would like to develop ourselves as an invaluable community asset, and that our lease would be renewed as needed.

Practical needs
Administrative help is always needed.
  • Building repairs are required to improve the safety of part of our building.
  • Able-bodied volunteers to help in the Good News Shed.

The coming year
  • One of the core members is working on starting a mentorship programme for local young people.
  • We are working with other local churches to plan how to celebrate Christmas in our community – carols at the local pub; befriending meals for those who are isolated; Chomp Christmas celebration.
  • Biblical Portrait of Marriage course
  • Neil and Jessica, and their three young children, will be visiting family in South Africa for the first time in five years.

General news
Over the summer, Neil and Jessica’s bus (which was being converted into a motorhome for family adventures) was burnt out.  This was a heart-breaking time, but God used it for the good!  The community has been pulled closer together and the tragedy has made the local residents more aware of our work in Moulsecoomb.  Neil and Jessica have received overwhelming support and love from the community.  Through this experience, we have been able to show love and forgiveness practically, and disciple people on how Christ loves and forgives us.  Those people connected to Good News Brighton have all grown on their faith journey through this experience, and the connections between them have deepened.

The Revd Neil Hilton
