Support Services Update - July 2021

Dear Friends

After months of anticipation, the moment is almost here when many of our churches (those in England at least) have the freedom to meet again in person without legal restrictions.  I wonder what your feelings are about this? I’m sure many of you will be looking forward to worshipping together as a church family.  However I am also sure that many will be wary or indeed anxious as this moment arrives with some of the highest case numbers we’ve seen and hospital admissions and deaths both rising.

The increased freedom brings some difficult decisions for church leaders.  The last year has been challenging, but we’ve had some rules to work to. Now that we have complete legal freedom, we have the challenge of how to best exercise that freedom.  Perhaps we should immediately operate our services exactly as we used to, sitting close together, singing with gusto and hugging all the friends we’ve not seen for so long?  But that will risk making those who are more cautious feel unsafe and therefore unwelcome.  Or should we continue to ask people to wear masks and keep their distance and constrain our worship?

It will be a rare church that finds unanimity on how to proceed so there is a real danger of conflict arising that will get in the way of our local mission as church.  Our challenge is to listen patiently and be loving and gracious in how we handle differing perspectives.  How we go about making these decisions will be as important to the spiritual wellbeing of our churches as the decisions we make.  I commend Ephesians 4:1-3 to you: “I … urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

We will be updating our guidance on the Coronavirus section of our website over the next few days to support you in planning your next steps.

Regards

Richard Wilson
Support Services Team Leader
