Support Services Update - September 2021
I’ve really enjoyed following Emma Raducanu’s progress over the last couple of weeks. She is clearly having a great time as she experiences the novelty of playing at the US Open for the first time. I love watching her just going for it and playing without the fear or doubt that more experienced competitors often face. She probably won’t win the tournament, but she’s going to give it her best shot!
I think there is a lesson for us as churches. We are in a very uncertain moment as we learn to navigate the new situation that we find ourselves in. We even have a significant advantage over Emma Raducanu because we know that in Christ we already have the eventual victory. So why are we so fearful? Perhaps we are worrying about whether the church might be able to get back to where it was before the pandemic? The simple reality is that it will never be the same again and I actually doubt that’s what God wants us to be aspiring to. We need to be forward-thinking about the opportunities we have in a post-pandemic world where many people are re-evaluating what is really important in their lives. How can we best serve God now rather than wishing for a past that has already gone?
Forward-thinking is not all about breezy optimism, as it may force us to face some tough choices. Maybe our income is likely to be lower in future and we need to consider the implications of that. That’s certainly a challenge we are facing in the Specialist Teams in Baptist House, along with several of our Regional Associations. However, I am sure God wants us, like Emma Raducanu, to have a mindset of giving it our best shot and making the most of the opportunities rather than fearing defeat.
As always do get in touch if you have any questions or suggestions.
May God bless you
