'UK Government must act after 1,000 days of war in Sudan' - Christian Aid

Christian Aid has joined 12 other leading humanitarian organisations to urge the UK government to act now to prevent further catastrophe in Sudan

A woman in South Sudan stands outdoors, holding a bundle of clothes, surrounded by others in colorful attire, some seated on the ground.

One thousand days of conflict has left a population stricken by life-threatening hunger, disease and violence, says the international development charity.

Almost 34 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian help, making Sudan the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. More than 11 million children face crisis or worse levels of hunger. 770,000 are at risk of dying from severe acute malnutrition.

Christian Aid CEO, Patrick Watt, said, 'As the former colonial power and a major aid donor, the UK could and should play a key role in stopping the fighting, and in ending the humanitarian emergency.

'As the 'penholder' on the UN Security Council the British government has helped to make the crisis more visible, including during the recent siege of El-Fasher which killed many thousands of civilians. But there is more that can be done to push for an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards a lasting peace.'

Along with the other charities, Christian Aid says the UK government should:

  • Scale-up its diplomatic efforts, including through the UN Security Council, to push for an immediate, nationwide ceasefire as the first step towards lasting peace.
  • Protect civilians, aid workers and local emergency responders by backing efforts to prevent further attacks, atrocities and international humanitarian law violations.
  • Secure rapid, safe, sustained humanitarian access across Sudan, especially to conflict-affected and besieged areas, so aid can reach every community in need.
  • Increase funding now, especially to local aid groups and women led organisations, to help stop catastrophic levels of hunger spreading further and provide life-saving assistance and services especially to women and children forced to flee their homes.
  • Support a regional response to this crisis, working with neighbouring countries to increase humanitarian assistance to refugees, enable safe cross-border access for humanitarian aid, and prevent the conflict from spreading further.

Signed petitions will be collected across all organisations and jointly handed in to Downing Street on 15 April 2026, three years on from the start of the conflict, demonstrating a united call for action and the strength of public support.
