More Than a Carpenter

Somewhat slim update of a multi-million seller - but remains a classic

More Than A CarpenterMore Than a Carpenter
By Josh McDowell and Sean McDowell
Authentic Media
ISBN: 978-1-85078-846-1
Reviewer: Pieter J. Lalleman

This book has sold over 15 million copies since it was first published in 1977 and has led many to Jesus Christ. It contains a series of factual bits of evidence for who Jesus is and for the reliability of the Bible.

Subjects tackled include the person of Jesus, the resurrection, messianic prophecies, and science and religion. The final chapter is a call to become a Christian. Similar books have been written by authors such as Michael Green, Lee Strobel and Amy Orr-Ewing.

The new edition has one new chapter, which tackles the 21st-century New Atheists and was written by Josh McDowell’s son Sean. The other chapters contain some new material, such as references to N.T. Wright, William L. Craig and Dan Brown.

Yet many old references remain, including to sources published long ago. Surprisingly, hardly any references to the internet have made their way into the book.

It would have been good to see a fuller update of the book. I, for one, would want to know what more recent authorities say. Yet even in its present form it can still provide rationalistic seekers with evidence for Christianity.

Of which there is plenty for less than a fiver!
